The Dark Secrets Series by Elizabeth Chandler (2009)

Comprised of four novels: No Time to Die, Legacy of Lies, Don't Tell, The Deep End of Fear.  Set in the town of Wisteria, Maryland, these four novels are delightful gothic lite--each stars a plucky, self-confident heroine facing a slightly supernatural situation. Like popcorn: fluffy, tasty, ultimately not very filling, but awfully fun.

Kiki Strike: Inside the Shadow City by Kristin Miller (2006)

Tale of a girl living in New York City who meets the elusive, mysterious Kiki Strike and gets recruited to join her band of followers to discover treasure in the Shadow City, the unknown city below the streets and buildings of New York. Adventurous, suspenseful and exciting, this is a great read for young adults looking for something out of the ordinary.

Beauty - Robin McKinley (1978)

Awfully endearing retelling of the Beauty and the Beast tale.  In this version, Beauty is anything but.  Her family calls her Beauty as a joke, but she is courageous of heart and when necessary, she goes to the Beast's castle and the story proceeds from there.  Lovely and romantic and very close in emotion to the classic film by Jean Cocteau.

The Secret Life of Sparrow Delaney by Suzanne Harper (2007)

Fun novel about a girl who has the ability to see and talk to ghosts. She comes from a family of mediums and lives in Lily Dale, an enclave of spiritualism, but is trying to start a new life at her new school without anyone knowing she's psychic. Of course, it doesn't really work out very well, due to one persistent ghost who won't leave her alone. Great characters, especially those of Sparrow and her family, make this a fun, supernatural-themed read.

A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb (2005)

syndetics-sc
Beautifully written young adult novel about a 130-year-old ghost who one day meets another ghost who persuades her to take someone's body and live life with him.  Romantic and thoughtful and spooky--a really lovely and suspenseful modern ghost story.
